COURSE INFORMATION

DESCRIPTION

The Physical Therapy for Pregnancy and Postpartum Lab (OB-AntePost Lab) is conducted 100% in-person and is open to all participants who have taken ANY of the following courses:

  • Fundamental Topics of Pregnancy & Postpartum Physical Therapy Webinar (OBF Webinar)
  • Physical Therapy for the Pregnant Patient Webinar (OB-Ante Webinar)
  • Physical Therapy for the Postpartum Patient Webinar (OB-Post Webinar) 

During this lab course, participants will learn and practice the necessary skills to effectively evaluate and treat pregnant people. Topics include: lumbopelvic, hip examination and special tests, thoracic spine evaluation and treatment, modifications of the pregnant examination, diastasis rectus abdominis examination and intervention; external pelvic floor assessment and exercise (NO internal pelvic floor techniques); therapeutic exercise in pregnancy and postpartum; cesarean scar assessment and mobilization techniques, and biomechanical strategies. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to practice with various pregnancy support belts and garments.

During the lab, participants will work in groups of 2-3. Everyone will participate as both “clinician” and “patient” and receive in the moment feedback and tips from instructors. All participants will participate in comprehensive situational lab scenarios to integrate learned skills. All people can fully participate in this lab, including people of any gender and individuals who are pregnant. Upon completion of this lab course, participants will have expanded examination and treatment skills to support the pregnant and postpartum patients.

LEARNER OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Examination/Evaluation:

  1. Perform an examination of a pregnant or postpartum patient with: a. Low back pain b. Pelvic girdle pain c. Hip pain  d. Thoracic pain
  2. Assess for diastasis rectus abdominis with objective measurement skills
  3. Perform an external assessment of pelvic floor muscle function 

Diagnosis/Prognosis:

  1. Utilize objective measurements to screen for medical referral
  2. Differentiate between low back, pelvic girdle and hip pain/dysfunction.

Intervention:

  1. Develop an evidence-based plan of care for physical therapy intervention of pregnant or postpartum patients with musculoskeletal impairments or dysfunction
  2. Demonstrate manual therapy interventions for the treatment of cesarean scars
  3. Describe effective cues to contract and relax the pelvic floor and transverse abdominal muscles 
  4. Explain ideal biomechanical strategies for pregnant or postpartum patients

REQUIREMENTS

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT | WHO IS ALLOWED TO TAKE THIS COURSE? (NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE):

Licensed Physical Therapist (PT), Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), 2nd Year Physical Therapy Student (SPT), 3rd Year Physical Therapy Student (SPT), No other professional types permitted for this course
  1. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is comfortable for you to move in during the lab activities (some attendees bring a sweater or pullover as temperatures in the auditoriums and classrooms can often fluctuate)
  2. Laptop and charger (if you wish to take notes electronically; printed lab manuals will be provided by the Academy)
  3. Snacks and refreshments (the Academy provides some light refreshments but you are welcome to bring your own as well)
  4. Pencils and/or pens (useful for lab activities and worksheet activities)
  5. Hair ties (if you have long hair, we recommend for you to tie it in a ponytail during the lab activities)
  6. Nail filer (due to the physical interaction between attendees, we recommend for you to file your nails prior to lab activities)

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT

Attendees must be present throughout the duration of the course. Contact hours will be forfeited and the attendee will be dismissed if the attendee:

  1. Misses two (2) or more lecture hours
  2. Misses any part of the Case Study Presentation and related group activities

To advance to the next course level, the attendee who missed the above will have to retake the course at her/his/their own expense. Should extenuating circumstances arise, it is the responsibility of the participant to notify a course faculty member of the need to leave. Consideration for course completion will be made on a case-by-case basis.
